The Perfect Time for Exterior Projects

While the fall weather brings football games and bonfires, it also brings a last
chance to protect your home from the weather. At Color Wheel Painting, we
like to focus on a few key projects to both protect your home and make it your
own going into the holiday season.
We find that when you paint during the summer, the heat can cause your paint
to dry too quickly, creating visible marks instead of one clean coat. During the
winter, water-based paints will freeze at 32 degrees and completely halt a
project. While ease of application may seem like a trivial reason to tackle
exterior projects during the fall, it’s a driving force behind quality work and
timely projects.
For the best outcome in any paint job, begin with a good base – use quality,
exterior Sherwin Williams paints. If you aren’t looking to paint this year,
consider taking the time to care for your paint. We advise clients to lightly
power wash their home once every couple of years to keep up maintenance.
For houses with raw wood siding, consider treating the wood to prevent cracks
and protect it from the elements. Since wood siding is exposed to weather,
stained, or clear coated siding can last up to 7 years, but because of exposure to
weather and sun, routine maintenance is required.
Protect your wood surfaces
Anytime is a good time to stain your deck, but fall is prime time to make sure
your deck is protected against the snow, sleet, and ice that comes with an
Arkansas winter.
To properly stain your deck, be sure to choose a stain with these three things.
First, make sure that it has a little sheen to reflect sunlight. Second, select an
oil-based stain for a smooth, even application. Finally, make sure the
consistency of your stain will compliment the type of wood you’re staining. To
maintain the stain itself, lightly power wash your deck every year.
Despite the fact a treated deck can keep out bugs and prevent decay, daily
exposure to sun and a few months of snow can begin to wear down protective
coats. Sherwin Williams Deck stains can last up to three years, longevity
depends on sunlight and amount of foot traffic. Other maintenance differs
based on manufacturer’s instructions.
Fences are another surface to consider. With decreased foot traffic, they can
often go as long as five years without needing to be stained. But a light power
washing every year will ensure longevity and fight against decay.
